2022 World Cup may be withdrawn from Qatar

Mubasher: Qatar could be stripped of hosting the 2022 World Cup amid mounting pressure to find an alternative host for the global event.

The vote-buying scandal emerged again after millions of dollars had been paid in bribes for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup votes.

“Among its findings, it revealed a secret payment of $2.6 million was made to the ten-year-old daughter of Brazilian FIFA bigwig Ricardo Teixeira, while three senior figures were flown to a meeting in Rio in a Qatari-owned jet,” Arabian Business reported.

The world's richest country per capita may not be ready to host the 2022 World Cup and there’s a threat that Qatar’s status as host of the international event might be withdrawn, according to Saudi Gazette.

Such talk has been circulating a lot on the back of Doha's conflict in the region. The world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) has been facing outflows of foreign customers' deposits after four Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia cut their diplomatic ties with the gas-rich state, accusing the GCC nation of financing terrorism.

Fifa, the world governing body, will search for another venue, Arabian Business said, adding that England and the United States are reportedly being lined up as alternative venues for the tournament.

Politicians in the UK support the idea of hosting the 2022 World Cup in the UK instead of Qatar.
