ABB technology to build world’s largest desalination plant in Abu Dhabi

UAE - Mubasher: ABB, a Switzerland-based technology company, has announced the use of its technology to develop and power the world’s largest desalination plant in Taweelah in Abu Dhabi at a total value of $500 million.

The project will have the capacity to process more than 900,000 cubic metres of seawater per day to meet the demands of more than 350,000 households, according to a press release on Monday.

Scheduled to become fully operational in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2022, the Taweelah project will be the first reverse osmosis independent water project in Abu Dhabi.

The plant will set new benchmarks for its size, efficiency, and cost by utilising the lowest amount of energy per cubic meter of water produced.

In coordination with SEPCOIII, the plant's engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, ABB will ensure power supply continuity, foster system operational efficiency, and decrease maintenance costs.

ABB is delivering 30 panels of UniGear ZS3.2 medium-voltage switchgear and 250 panels of MNS® low-voltage switchgear with digital capabilities to power the seawater desalination equipment.

The Managing Director of ABB Electrification in the Middle East and Africa, Loay Dajani, said: "We are very proud that ABB technology will be used at the Taweelah plant, which will contribute to the UAE’s goals of building a more sustainable, self-reliant, and efficient water and energy sector in the country."
