ADPower to establish solar power plant with world's lowest tariff

Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) received a bid to establish the world's largest solar power plant, to be located in Al Dhafra in Abu Dhabi, with the lowest tariff worldwide.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), ADPower's subsidiary, has received five consortia’s technical and commercial bids for Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer (IPP), according to a recent press release.

With a generating capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), the project has recorded the world's lowest tariff set at AED 4.97 fils/kWh ($1.35 cents/kWh) on a Levelized Electricity Cost (LEC) basis.

Al Dhafra Solar PV project's generating capacity raises Abu Dhabi's total solar power generating capacity to nearly 3.2 GW.

In addition, it will cut Abu Dhabi's CO2 emissions by more than 3.6 million metric tons per year.

Commenting on the project, the CEO and Managing Director of ADPower, Jasim Husain Thabet, said: "The water and electricity sector intends to play a critical role in meeting the target of having 50% of Abu Dhabi’s energy needs served from renewable and clean energy sources by 2030, as well as the reduction of the generation system’s average carbon intensity by more than 70%, compared to 2015."

Meanwhile, the CEO of EWEC, Othman Al Ali, noted: "Securing such competitive tariffs on our energy projects is fundamental to support economic growth across all sectors in the UAE. We look forward to signing the Power Purchase Agreement and to delivering the project in Q2 2022.”
