UAE – Mubasher: The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) on Saturday announced that Noor Abu Dhabi, the 1,177 megawatts single solar project, had started commercial operation.
The project will help wean Abu Dhabi off hydrocarbon energy and cut carbon dioxide emissions in the UAE by 1 million metric tonnes per year, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Located at Sweihan in Abu Dhabi, the AED 3.2 billion solar plant, is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi Power Corporation and a consortium of Japan’s Marubeni Corp and China’s Jinko Solar Holding.
"The completion of the project marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, launched in 2017, to increase the contribution of clean energy in the total energy mix to 50% by 2050 while reducing the carbon footprint of power generation by 70%,” chairman of EWEC Mohammad Hassan Al Suwaidi said.
The plant features over 3.2 million solar panels installed across 8 kilometres and will supply electricity to 90,000 people.
