Abu Dhabi Municipality to upgrade longest tunnel in ME

Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has started the Sheikh Zayed Tunnel and Street Project in Abu Dhabi, which aims at enhancing transportation services.

The AED 109 million ($29.68 million) project will include new entry and exit points for the tunnel, as well as major improvement to junctions with other streets, according to a statement on Monday.

The project, which will continue for 790 days, will contribute to enhancing street traffic capacity and traffic safety.

“The Municipality will undertake the Project by adding improvements to the first phase instead of carrying out three phases. This includes upgrading Sheikh Zayed Tunnel and Street as per traffic safety requirements and ensuring flexible traffic flow for both vehicles and road users,” the statement added.

In 2012, the Abu Dhabi City Municipality opened Sheikh Zayed Street Tunnel, “the longest tunnel in the Middle East of 3.6 kilometers, including a 2.4-kilometer enclosed section, adding to the integrated and extensive modern infrastructure in Abu Dhabi emirate,” the statement showed.
