Abu Dhabi Reveals 10 Mega Projects

Abu-Dhabi - Decypha:  Amidst the depressed crude oil prices, Abu Dhabi is plunging ahead with ten mega projects worth $37 billion, set to be completed by 2020.

Construction for the mega projects has commenced before the crude prices slump in 2014 and they include: Louvre Abu Dhabi, Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, Midfield Airport Terminal, Sewage Tunnel, E11 Highway, Zayed City infrastructure, Jabel Hafeet Housing Development, Al Ain New Hospital, Ain Al Faida Residential Development, and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, Bloomberg reported.

A $1.14 billion facility, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a Jean Nouvel-designed building surrounded by water. The building is expected to be completed in May of 2017.

The $23 billion Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear plant in the UAE, set to supply 25% of its electricity needs starting May 2020, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Cooperation stated. The plant is to include four reactors, producing a combined 5,600 megawatts.

The new Midfield Airport Terminal will double airport capacity to 30 million passengers a year, and will cost $3.5 billion. With over six levels, the airport will cost $3.5 billion and will comprise a hotel, shops, and restaurants. Expected completion is January 2019.

Sewage Tunnel is about 41 kilometers in length, one of the world’s longest, and is due to be completed by Q3 of this year. An additional 43 kilometers of smaller linking tunnels will contribute to the sewage tunnel and will cost $1.5 billion.

 With a cost of $1.5 billion, the E11 Highway and road upgrade program will link Abu Dhabi with the Saudi Arabian border via the industrial hub of Ruwais. The highway will include 15 flyovers.

 A new district in Abu Dhabi, Zayed City, will see infrastructure in the form of road networks, sewage, lighting, electricity, and water infrastructure completed by January 2020 with a cost of $909 million.

Jabel Hafeet Housing Development is a residential project near Al Ain, and set to home for 3,000 people. To be completed by the end of the year, the project will include a school, a clinic, and other facilities.

The Al Ain New Hospital, comprised of 719 beds, will be completed in December of 2018 at a cost of $1.2 billion in Al Ain city.

Ain Al Faida Residential Development is a residential project in Al Ain city, developed by the government, will include homes for 2,000 people. With investments of $1.14 billion, the project will be completed by July of 2017.

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, a 739-bed hospital, will be the first to provide advanced treatment for burns, at a cost of $1.1 billion.
