Abu Dhabi new airport capacity to hit 84m passengers per year

Abu Dhabi - Mubasher: Abu Dhabi Airports has announced that the Abu Dhabi new Midfield Terminal will be opened by the end of 2019 and will be able to accommodate 84 million passengers every year.

Abu Dhabi International Airport received about 24.5 million passengers in 2016, according to a statement released late Monday.

Completion levels at the new airport reached around 86% with a total cost of AED 19.1 billion, according to the company.

Construction progress is going according to plan, the Abu Dhabi airports company said, indicating that the new building has 65 connected gates, 14 separate ones along with 106 jet bridges.

The total area of the new project is 742,000 square metres and includes 200,000 square metres for the outer glass. The project’s executive consortium includes Consolidated Contractors Company of Greece and Turkey’s airports specialist, TAV Group.

The Midfield Terminal is the most important step within the development plans of transport networks in Abu Dhabi.

It is expected that the new building will contain the largest inner bow across the world that extends 180 metres in length, 52 metres in height, and 1,000 metric tonnes in weight.

Moreover, the building will include a variety of duty free shops, restaurants, and terminals.

The company is currently implementing three free zones in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Buteen airports, Abu Dhabi Airport officials stated.

Finally, the company aims at making Abu Dhabi the world’s top destination and its airport the most prominent architecture on both the regional and the global transport network maps.
