Riyadh – Mubasher: Saudi Arabian utility developer Acwa Power along with Saudi Brothers Commercial Company (SBCC) have been awarded the establishment of Rabigh 3 IWP water desalination plant.
Located on Saudi Arabia’s east coast along the Red Sea, the project is set to be the world’s largest independent water desalination plant using reverse osmosis (RO) technology, the renewable energy developer said in a statement.
The plant will provide water demands for the Saudi cities of Jeddah and Makkah, especially during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and Hajj period as it is expected to provide a capacity of 600,000 cubic metres per day.
“Rabigh 3 IWP will deliver potable water at the lowest cost achieved to date for RO while consuming the least amount of power for each cubic meter of water produced. It is consequently another important step in elevating living standards in the kingdom,” Acwa Power’s chairman Mohammad Abunayyan stated.
The Riyadh-based electricity and water firm further noted that the plant is to be operational by the end of 2021.
“Rabigh 3 IWP will contribute to economic progress and increased employment opportunities, helping the Kingdom reach the highest levels of prosperity,” Abunayyan added.
The Saudi Arabian utility developer did not disclose the cost of the project.
