Agricultural city to be set up in Qattara Depression - Minister

Cairo – Mubasher: An integrated agricultural city project worth $10 billion is set to be established in Egypt, minister of agriculture and land reclamation Abdul Moneim El-Banna said on Tuesday.

The city will be set up on a 300,000-acre land in the south east region of the Qattara Depression and will include agricultural projects and other relevant projects, El-Banna said.

This move has been announced alongside the signing of the cooperation protocol between the General Authority for Reconstruction Projects and Agricultural Development (GARPAD) and the Korean-Arab association for cultural and economic exchange, represented in Egypt by the Korean-Arab company for economic and cultural consulting.

The project includes implementing agricultural projects using the most up-to-date technologies and advanced agricultural techniques, in addition to taking care of the strategic crops which save water, he added.

The project includes establishing 50,000 smart greenhouses, creating animal, fish, and poultry farms, and initiating fodder production projects, as well as growing stevia plants, an alternative to sugar, the minister highlighted, noting that water desalination projects and solar energy plants will also be built.

He said that the Korean-Arab company will submit the feasibility study and time period to execute the project within six months, with Egyptian workers under the supervision of South Korean experts.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi had visited South Korea in March 2016 and invited South Korean firms to invest in Egypt.
