Air pollution costs global economy $5 trillion annually

UAE – Mubasher: Air pollution costs the global economy $5 trillion each year, while 92% of people worldwide do not breathe fresh air, CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, said on Tuesday.

Organised under the theme Air Pollution, World Environment Day 2019 gives an opportunity to urge governments, industries, communities, and individuals to cooperate to embrace renewable energy and green technologies to improve air quality in cities around the world, he added.

"Dubai has been a pioneer in the implementation of programmes and initiatives that contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, launching the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park: the largest single-site solar park in the world,” the Emirates News Agency reported, citing Al Tayer as saying.

With a projected capacity of 5,000 megawatts and AED 16 billion investments, the park will use three techniques for producing clean energy: the first is a 260-metre (850-foot) tower receiving focused sunlight, the world's tallest such tower, and solar photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 250 megawatts.
