Al-Sisi calls on CBE governor for basic commodity needs

Cairo-Mubasher: Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi asked the country's central bank governor Tarek Amer to provide the necessary financial resources required for basic commodities, as well as to maintain price stability, according to a statement.

The President also called for cutting the public debt and increasing the monetary reserves, while taking into account that low-income citizens should not be affected by any reform measures, Presidential Spokesman Alaa Youssef said.

Public debt rose to EGP 2.49 trillion ($280.43 billion) by the end of March 2016.

Amer said that the preliminary agreement between Egypt and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is proceeding according to plan, Youssef noted.

Egypt seeks to get dollars from all possible channels, amid the decline in tourism, exports and remittances from Egyptian expatriates. The country managed to reach a tentative agreement with the IMF on a loan of $12 billion over three years.

The government also plans to issue dollar-denominated eurobonds worth $3-5 billion.
