Mubasher: Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika has officially resigned, BBC News reported on Tuesday.
Bouteflika, who ruled the gas-rich country from a wheelchair after suffering a stroke six years ago, took his decision on the back of a wave of protests triggered after the ruling party, the National Liberation Front (FLN), announced his candidacy for a fifth term.
In March, the Algerian army requested the parliament to declare that the president’s post became vacant.
Bouteflika has ruled the North African country since 2003.
