BMW targets 50% rise in electric car sales in 2018

Mubasher: BMW on Tuesday announced that it plans to increase electric car sales by 50% to 150,000 cars in 2018 in a bid to reduce relying on gasoline-powered cars, the company’s head of development department said.

If the German luxury carmaker achieves the target, it will increase growth of electric car sales by two-thirds compared to 2016, he added.

In an attempt to boost the shift to electric vehicles, the company will start raising its sales of all-new “X7 SUV” and “8-Series Coupe” which are priced at 100,000 euros as of the next year.

“Our goal for the luxury segment in the next few years is taking more market share,’’ Chief Executive Officer Harald Krueger said.

Electric car sales hit a record of 287,000 cars in the third quarter ended September 30, 2017.
