Mubasher: Bahrain will begin officially imposing the selective tax starting from Saturday 30 December 2017.
The excise tax will be imposed on specific harmful goods including, carbonated drinks at a rate of 50%, and energy drinks and tobacco products at a rate of 100%, according to the Bahraini Ministry of Finance (MoF).
The 2015 Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit in Riyadh agreed to implement the tax in the member countries, with aim to encourage citizens to opt for healthy products, reduce the consumption of harmful goods, enhance social awareness and alleviate the financial burden resulting from the treatment of diseases, according to the Bahrain News Agency (BNA).
