Careem ceases Sudan business after Uber’s $3.1bn acquisition deal

UAE – Mubasher: The Dubai-based ride-hailing app Careem has ended operations in Sudan in less than a year from launching its services in the country, Reuters reported, citing a spokeswoman from the company.

“There are no plans to close any other markets and ceasing Sudan operations will not have any effect on Careem’s other markets,” she said.

Uber Technologies, Inc said in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) it projected this to happen before the completion of the $3.1 billion acquisition of Careem expected to take place early 2020.

Careem, Uber's Mideast rival, started operations in Sudan in September 2018 after the US lifted economic sanctions on Khartoum in 2017.

It is worth noting that Sudan still remains on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism and few international companies entered the northeast African nation when the US economic sanctions on it were lifted.
