DEWA awards AED 817m desalination plant contract to JV

Dubai – Mubasher: The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced awarding a contract for the construction of a desalination plant in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA).

The AED 871 million ($237 million) contract was awarded to a joint venture (JV) formed of ACCIONA Agua and Belhasa Six Construct (BeSIX), the authority said.

“This project is in line with our decoupling plans for water desalination and power production and water desalination using solar energy,” commented DEWA CEO and managing director Mohammed Al Tayer.

Under the deal, the JV will be responsible for the construction of a 40 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) reverse osmosis plant.

The top official further noted that the authority is continuously working to bolster the efficiency and reliability of its water network, meet the ever-growing demand for water as well as to raise the volume of water reserves and support sustainable development in the emirate of Dubai.

DEWA’s larger projects have helped reduce the cost of electricity production through solar energy on a global scale, Al Tayer revealed.

“We continue to decouple electricity production from water desalination to obtain 100% desalinated water using a mix of clean energy and waste heat by 2030," DEWA’s CEO highlighted.
