DEWA inks water purchase, shareholder agreements for $410m Hassyan Sea Water Reverse Osmosis

UAE - Mubasher: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has inked a 35-year water purchase agreement and the shareholder agreement with Emirati company Utico to build the Hassyan Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Plant worth $410 million (about AED 1.5 billion).

With a capacity of 120 million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD), the project will be established using the Independent Water Producer (IWP) model, according to a press release on Wednesday.

Expected to be completed by March 2024, DEWA’s first IWP project has the lowest levelised water tariff of $0.277 per cubic metre.

The Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, commented: "We work to increase the production capacity of desalinated water to meet the growing demand, with the aim of reaching 750 MIGD of desalinated water, compared to the current 470 MIGD."

Al Tayer added: "We aim to produce 100% of desalinated water using a mix of clean energy and waste heat by 2030."
