Dubai-Mubasher: The DMCC Tea Centre targets to increase its total trade volume of tea by 5-7% in 2016, Tea Centre director Sanjeev Dutta said.
The centre handled 41 million kilograms of tea in Dubai last year, Dutta added on the sidelines of Global Dubai Tea Forum on Wednesday.
The DMCC Tea Centre saw a growth rate of 208% over the past three years.
It currently processes teas from 13 different countries including Kenya, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Japan, Uganda, and China.
The centre plans for new expansion by building new facilities to meet 90% of the global firms’ demands on storage and packaging, Dutta noted.
The expansion plan is scheduled to be complete by the second half of 2017.
In early 2014, the DMCC Tea Centre initiated a two-year capital expenditure programme into new facilities, spanning a total area of 24,000 square metres.
The expansion project’s value may be double the $27 million construction cost of the DMCC Tea Centre.
