Dubai – Mubasher: Global ports operator DP World on Wednesday announced the launch of an international joint venture with the industrial engineering firm SMS Group in a bid to change the way that containers are handled in ports, according to a statement.
“BOXBAY” system, scheduled to be ready in time for the Dubai Expo 2020 with a pilot project at Jebel Ali Terminal 4, is considered a new and smart High Bay Storage (HBS) system.
Featuring a unique rack structure, the new system has the ability to store containers up to 11 stories high, with the capacity of a conventional terminal in just a third of the surface area.
In December 2018, DP World partnered with AMOVA, a subsidiary of SMS group, to develop an HBS system to handle metal coils that weigh as much as 50 tonnes each in racks as high as 50 metres.
“BOXBAY will present its technology and operator business cases for the first time in public at the Terminal Operator Conference (TOC Europe) in Rotterdam in June,” the statement added.
