DP World, SMS group partner to operate world's 1st 'multi-storey port'

Dubai – Mubasher: DP World has teamed up with the industrial engineering specialists SMS group to launch a new and intelligent storing system, that will revolutionise the way that containers are handled in ports.

The state-of-the-art storing system will be applied at Jebel Ali Terminal 4 in preparations for the Dubai Expo 2020, the Dubai-based ports operator said.

AMOVA, a subsidiary of SMS group, has developed the high-bay Storage system to handle metal coils that weigh as much as 50 tonnes each in racks as high as 50 metres.

The new system will place each container in an individual rack compartment instead of stacking containers directly on top of each other, DP World noted.

The containers will be stored in an 11-story rack, increasing the port’s capacity by 200%, the world's fourth-biggest ports operator added.

Commenting on rolling out the new system, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem DP World Group chairman and CEO, said, “Our engagement in new technologies is a major priority and we have become known for seeking ways that transform the way goods are moved across the world. Innovation is part of our DNA and at the heart of our success.”

DP World said that the new applied system brings big gains in speed, energy efficiency, better safety and a major reduction in costs.

“This new container handling technology allows cities to use their expensive and sensitive land and waterfront areas more effectively. Our system will significantly increase the productivity of handling ships on the quay,” Bin Sulayem added.
