Daily ships passing through Suez Canal rise in 2017 – Official

Cairo – Mubasher: The number of ships passing through the Suez Canal has increased to between 50 and 60 ships per day since the start of 2017, said the head of the Suez Canal Authority on Thursday.

The rise is due to a recovery in global trade and the adoption of new flexible marketing strategies, Mohab Mamish said, adding that the Canal's unique location makes it attractive for cargo ships and other carriers to pass through.

The development of several projects by the authority including the New Suez Canal, which helped reduce passing carrier costs as well as trim waiting hours by as much as 11 hours, which in turn cuts on fuel consumption and operating costs, the top official highlighted.

Mamish previously said that the Suez Canal's revenues reached $423.9 million in March, up 1.77% year-on-year from $416.9 million.
