Dubai Duty Free accepts Indian rupee for financial transactions

UAE – Mubasher: Dubai Duty Free stores at the Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum Airport announced they have begun accepting the Indian rupee for conducting official financial transactions, Khaleej Times reported.

The Indian Rupee is the 16th foreign currency to be accepted at the point of sales of terminals in the two airports within the emirate, according to an official statement.

This move will encourage Indian investors to boost their investments into the UAE, particularly in Dubai.

Indian travellers previously had to exchange Indian rupee to UAE dirham, US Dollar, Euro, or Sterling Pound to pay for what they purchase at the Dubai Duty Free stores.

In 2018, almost 12.2 million Indian passengers travelled through the Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum Airport.

The Indian expats account for 30% of total residents in the UAE, representing the largest community within the country with around 2.7 million residents.
