Dubai Expo 2020 to be boon for UK businesspeople after Brexit

Dubai — Mubasher: Dubai’s Expo 2020 is a “massive” opportunity for UK businesspeople to showcase innovation, synchronising with the country’s departure from the European Union (EU) and its quest to do business outside the bloc, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan said.

Expo 2020 Dubai will be held on 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021 and is expected to welcome more than 25 million visitors.

The six-month event is “really big for the UK in terms of raising our (the UAE’s) profile back in the UK,” Simon Penney told Arabian Business in an interview.

He highlighted the participation of the UK’s Stephen Hawking-inspired, high-tech pavilion in Expo 2020 Dubai.

“It very much showcases one of the key themes, which is artificial intelligence [AI]. The whole theme of our pavilion will be tech and AI, and that’s really important because that resonates with the UAE,” Arabian Business reported, citing Penney as saying.

In the same vein, he said that a slew of British firms will benefit from being a part of the GCC emirate’s strenuous effort to prepare the Expo 2020 site.

“UK firms are involved in just about every single aspect of [the event] in terms of providing services or goods,” Penney noted.

The official highlighted the event's “important time” for the UK as Expo 2020 synchronises with the time period in which the nation will officially depart from the European bloc.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase [the UK] on the international stage at a point in time in which we have left the EU,” he said.
