Dubai – Mubasher: The UAE's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated testing for the first hybrid abra, which will be able to carry up to 20 passengers, with plans to build 11 new marine transit stations across the emirate of Dubai
For just AED 2, a passenger can hop onboard a solar-powered abra in Dubai, according to the RTA.
An abra is a traditional wooden boat used to ferry people from one place to another, however, the RTA's newest launch brings technology with solar-power.
The new abra is powered by a 20-kilowatt electric motor, RTA chairman and director-general Mattar Al Tayer said.
“The trial run of the hybrid abra supports the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,” Al Tayer pointed out.
The abra has 26 lead crystal batteries and solar energy panels along with a standby generator to recharge batteries when running low in power.
Al Tayer noted that the abra comprises an automated firefighting system and USB ports for recharging cell phones.
The hybrid abra will be operated on a trial on Al Seef - Al Ghubaiba line, Baniyas, Dubai Old Souq, and Al Ghubaiba.
“The step is in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, Dubai Plan 2021, and the UAE Vision 2021. It is also compatible with RTA’s Master Plan for leveraging marine transport in Dubai which is used by 13 million riders per annum,” Al Tayer added.
Moreover, RTA plans to build 11 new marine transit stations in Dubai within the coming two years, raising the total number to 58.
It also intends to establish 11 boats to bring the total number to 61 boats.
The new lines will be operated in Dubai Creek, Jumeirah beach, new islands, and the Dubai Water Canal.
