Dubai – Mubasher: Dubai-based Alpha Utilities is in advanced negotiations to enter the water desalination sector in Saudi Arabia.
Alpha Utilities is looking to expand its seawater reverse osmosis desalination (SWRO) model in the Middle East and is currently in discussions to foray into the Saudi market, Arabian Business reported on Thursday, citing Bhanu Choudhrie, a director at the firm’s parent company C&C Alpha Group.
In the UAE market, Alpha Utilities is the owner and operator of a SWRO plant in the emirate of Sharjah with a capacity of 0.5 million gallons of water per day and aims to boost the plant capacity to 2 million gallons per day.
The Dubai-based firm also has the exclusive rights for providing desalinated water to the Hamriyah Free Trade Zone Authority.
Saudi Arabia’s water desalination market is a lucrative sector in the region as “in the desert, the supply of electricity and water is fundamental”, Choudhrie added, noting that “the UAE has been growing its infrastructure and all these projects require huge amounts of water.”
In 2018, Acwa Power was awarded a deal to establish the world’s largest independent water desalination in Rabigh.
On Wednesday, the UK-based C & C Alpha Group has revealed plans to expand in the hotel sector in Saudi Arabia and the UAE over the coming period.
