EBRD launches green energy support programme for Egyptian women

Cairo – Mubasher: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has launched a programme for women in Egypt that supports renewable energy.

The programme will improve employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women in green energy, the London-based lender said in a statement.

This initiative aims at supporting renewable energy and promoting gender equality in Egypt within the framework of a joint $7 million technical cooperation initiative co-funded by the EBRD and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the bank added.

This programme bolsters the North African state to meet its target of 20% renewable energy generation by 2022 and 42% by 2035, the EBRD noted.

The EBRD seeks to boost the country’s renewable energy capacity as a strategic priority in collaboration with the Egyptian government, according to the statement.

The Egyptian renewable energy sector is expected to offer new jobs, which will allow women in Egypt to “expand their skills and participate in a high-value, high-growth sector”, the bank said.

It is worth noting that the EBRD had invested over EUR 4.8 billion into almost 91 projects in Egypt, including 16 renewable projects.
