Cairo – Mubasher: Egyptian Electricity Transmission Co (EETC) has signed an agreement with a three-firm consortium to set up a wind farm in Gabal El Zeit area with $400 million in investment.
The project includes generating electricity from wind plants with a production capacity of 250 megawatts, accounting for one-third of Egypt’s total wind power generation now, according to state-run news agency MENA.
The consortium comprised of Japan’s Toyota Tsusho, France’s Engie, and Egypt’s Orascom Construction Ltd.
As per the agreement, the farm will begin trial operations by mid-2019 and will be completely finalised by the end of the same year.
Commenting on the establishment of the wind farm, electricity minister Mohamed Shaker said that the project is in line with the sector’s strategy to bolster and accelerate generating energy from new and renewable sources to 20% and 42% of total production by 2022 and 2035, respectively.
The consortium will operate and perform maintenance for the wind farm for 20 years under the power purchase agreement (PPA).
