EGA, Mubadala to set up AED 1bn power block in Jebel Ali

Dubai – Mubasher: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), in collaboration with Mubadala and Dubai Holding, has announced the beginning of building a new power block at EGA's Jebel Ali smelter in Dubai.

The project’s total cost amounted AED 1 billion, EGA, the UAE's largest industrial company outside oil and gas, said in a statement.

The new power facility is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from EGA's power generation at Jebel Ali by 10%.

Emissions reductions per tonne of aluminium produced at Jebel Ali are expected to reach 7%

“This project reinforces our sustainable development journey, as well as our support of one of the UAE's most vital industries. Now we have broken ground, we look forward to developing this project successfully,” Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, vice-chairman of Dubai Holding and vice-chairman of EGA, commented.

Earlier, Mubadala and Dubai Holding have formed a joint venture to develop the new highly efficient power plant.

However, EGA is considering buying the facility’s production for 25 years following commissioning.

“We are pleased to break ground on this important project which will improve our power generation efficiency at Jebel Ali, saving costs and environmental emissions. We are now focused on safe construction and ultimately starting up the new power block in line with our plans,” Khaled Al Qubaisi, EGA board member, said.
