Mubasher: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) said its AED 11 billion Al Taweelah alumina refinery reached a significant construction milestone, according to a statement.
The Calciners section of the new plant achieved a 60% completion, while the project's overall completion is currently at 37%.
The refinery is “the second to be built anywhere in the Middle East,” the company said, adding that the plant will refine bauxite ore into alumina, the feedstock for aluminium smelters.
Construction of the project is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2018. The refinery will be capable of producing two million tonnes per year of alumina.
Some five million tonnes of bauxite ore will be imported each year from Guinea to feed the Al Taweelah alumina refinery.
EGA is investing AED 3.7 billion to develop a bauxite mine in Guinea, which will have a capacity of 12 million tonnes of bauxite ore per year.
The mine’s commercial production is expected to begin in 2018, the statement highlighted.
