Cairo - Decypha: Egypt's total natural gas demand increases by an averag of 13% per year, a seniro official at the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) told Decypha.
The country has been importing between 1.4 to 1.7 billion cubic feet of gas per day per month to meet the needs of markets and power plants and consumers.
Egypt discovered the first gas field in the Abu Madi zone in the Delta Alnaam 1967 by Belayim Petroleum Company, a joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and the International Oil Company, with the first offshore gas discovery in the Abu Qir in the Mediterranean in 1969. Since then, several discoveries have been achieved, including in Qoraa, Quantara 1, Khelal 1, NAF, and Port Fouad, Waqar, and Qersh.
The Mediterranean is considered a promising region in terms of gas discoveries, especially in deep water. Some of the field discoveries include Rashid, Saffron, Simian, King Mariot, and other discoveries in the Western Desert, most importantly Alabyad and Matrouh.Matrouh.
