EGX drops early Sunday on Tanta church explosion

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) opened Sunday in the red coinciding with news reports of a terrorist attack near a church in Tanta.

By 10:25am Cairo time, the benchmark EGX30 dropped 0.94% or 125.57 points to 12,972.97 points. The EGX50 index lost 0.35% to 2,094.52 points, whereas the EGX70 and EGX100 indices shrugged off the news and gained 0.46% and 0.09% to 589.46 points and 1,354.1 points, respectively.

Turnover reached EGP 90.44 million after 36.031 million shares were traded.

Egyptian Nile News channel said an explosion took place in the surrounding area of Mar Girgis Church in Tanta.

The secretary general of Al Gharbiya governorate told Extra News channel that the explosion left 13 dead and 31 injured. 

Foreign and Egyptian investors began selling, netting EGP 2.85 million and EGP 846,500, respectively, whereas Arabs were buyers, netting EGP 3.7 million.

Rubex, Egyptian Fertilizers, Al Ahram Printing, Abo Qir Fertilizers, and Amer Group were among the EGX’s top fallers, losing between 6.67% and 3.23%.

On the positive side, EGAS, Orascom Hotels, Orange Egypt, Baraka Bank, and Prime Holding led risers, surging between 8.82% and 5.46%.
