Egypt, KSA to ink $1.56bn electricity interconnection deal in April

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt will sign the contracts of the $1.56 billion electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia in the forthcoming April, Egypt’s electricity minister Mohamed Shaker told MENA.

Egypt has great potentials to generate renewable energy that exceed the need, shaker added, pointing out that Egyptian government has adopted several strategies to make the country a source of energy to export it abroad.

He further noted that Egypt has numerous opportunities to benefit from electricity interconnection projects with the African countries, particularly the Democratic Republic of the proposed hydroelectric Congo through the Grand Inga Dam.

The minister stressed that Egypt’s electricity interconnection with Saudi Arabia will come into force in 2021.

The joint project includes the extension of a 20-kilometre submarine cable, with a capacity of up to 3000 megawatts, over the Gulf of Aqaba.
