Egypt, KSA to launch electricity interconnection project late September

Riyadh – Mubasher: Egypt and Saudi Arabia are set to sign the first stage of the contract for the electricity interconnection project in late September, Al Watan newspaper reported on Monday, citing Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) CEO Gamal Abdel Rahim as saying.

Abdel Rahim added that the project will likely start operating through submarine and aerial power cables in 2020, according to the Egyptian newspaper.

The two Arab countries will sign the electric power transmissions stations contracts to convert transmitted power from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), he noted.

EETC’s CEO also pointed out that Egypt is currently carrying out the Badr-Tabouk aerial cable project at a cost of $1.2 billion through the self-financing.

In March, electricity and renewable energy minister, Mohammed Shaker announced that the interconnection project will end in 2019 at 30,000 Megawatt.
