Egypt: No rises in food subsidy cards

By: Mahmoud Salah Eldin

Cairo - Mubasher: The Egyptian government has no intention of increasing the allocations of the food subsidy cards, the spokesperson of the Egyptian ministry of supply and internal trading told Mubasher.

Mohamed Askar negated the media reports that quoted the minister saying the cards subsidies will be raised. The minister meant that the economic reforms should not have negative effects on the poor nor the rich equally, the spokesperson explained.

No such decisions are being studied, he said, adding that in case there will be, it’s the cabinet’s responsibility.

Earlier, Reuters quoted the supply and internal trading minister Mohamed Ali El-Sheikh saying that the central bank of Egypt (CBE) has allocated $1.8 billion to ensure six months of reserves in all strategic goods.
