Cairo – Mubasher: Trade exchange between Egypt and Romania stood at $617 million during the period between January to November 2017, trade minister Tarek Kabil said in a statement on Tuesday.
Egyptian exports to the European country surged to $124.3 million in the 11-month period last year, versus $100.2 million in the same period of 2016, Kabil added.
The North African state’s key exports to Romania are fertilisers, medicines, electrical cables and wires, vegetables and fruits, chemicals, and crops, the minister highlighted.
Romanian investments in the Arab world's most populous country amounted to $18.3 million into 50 projects stretching from services to industrial, information technology (IT) sectors, he indicated.
This came on the sidelines of the minister’s meeting with his Romanian counterpart Ştefan-Radu Oprea at the 10th Union for the Mediterranean Trade Ministerial Conference in Belgium, Brussel.
Egypt is seeking to benefit from Romania in agriculture as a strategic partner in supplying wheat, Kabil emphasised, noting that the Arab nation imports up to million tonnes of Romanian wheat per annum.
A direct airline should connect Egypt and Romania this year, which will reinforce ties between both countries in terms of several fields topped by tourism, Kabil stressed.
For his part, Oprea said that a trade delegation from Romania will be visiting Egypt next April and May to study key competitive merits of the Egyptian market.
An Egyptian trade delegation had visited Bucharest last January and February, Oprea noted, adding that various Romanian firms have participated in the currently held Cairo International Book Fair.
