Egypt allocates EGP 328bn to social protection in FY19/20

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s government has allocated EGP 327.7 billion to social protection programmes in fiscal year 2019/2020, up from EGP 198.6 billion in FY14/15, according to a report released by the country’s Ministry of Planning.

Over the last five years, the North African nation directed more than EGP 1.3 trillion to these programmes, the report showed.

The government aims to increase support to social protection programmes after slashing fuel subsidies.

Previously, the richest 40% of Egypt’s population benefited from 60% of fuel subsidies, while the poorest 40% received 25% only of fuel subsidies.
