Egypt allocates additional EGP 6.2bn to health sector

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt has allocated an additional amount of EGP 6.2 billion to support the health sector and meet the needs for medicines and medical supplies to curb the spread of coronavirus coronavirus (COVID-19), finance minister Mohamed Maait said.

The $2.772 billion financial emergency package approved by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will help the country meet the urgent needs of some sectors such as the health sector and support social protection programmes, Maaid pointed out in statement on Thursday.

Government investments will be increased by EGP 10 billion to help businesses keep their workforce and make due payments to suppliers and contractors, he added.

In addition, some economic sectors affected by the pandemic will be supported by about EGP 15 billion through tax installment payment plans and additional funding.

During the last two and half months, the Egyptian government has spent EGP 40 billion out of EGP 100 billion allocated to curb the spread of coronavirus, he revealed.

Last week, Maait said that an additional amount of EGP 5.1 billion has been allocated to support the healthcare sector.

It is noteworthy to mention that Egypt’s COVID-19 cases reached 10,431 after the detection of 338 new cases on Wednesday.
