Cairo – Mubasher: The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade said it bought 57,500 tonnes of wheat from local farmers since the start of the supply season on 15 April.
Egypt, the largest wheat importer in the world, expects to receive around 3.7 million tonnes of local wheat, which will increase strategic wheat supply significantly.
The new delivery is expected to meet demand till mid-September this year.
Prices are encouraging at EGP 420 per ardeb (around 150 kg), said supply minister Khaled Hanafy, adding that storage capacities have been raised this year after the construction of 17 new silos using a UAE donation.
The harvest season of local wheat begins in mid-April and extends for a three-month period.
