Egypt extends ban on white sugar imports

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry, Nevine Gamea, issued a decree to resume the ban on white sugar imports for three additional months starting from the date of publishing the decree in the official gazette.

Under the decree, there is an exception for the sugar needed for pharmaceutical manufacturing, according to a statement on Tuesday.

The decision is aimed at protecting the national industry from fluctuations of sugar prices globally, Gamea said, noting that sugar imports were cheaper than the cost of local production.

Local reserves of sugar amounted to 1.4 million tonnes which are sufficient for more than six months of local consumption.
