Egypt eyes Cairo-Cape Town road development to boost Africa footprint

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt aims to construct a land road linking Cairo and Cape Town in an effort to develop joint projects with the African countries, the Egyptian transport minister said.

A part of the road, which links Egypt to the borders with Sudan, has been established and is ready for operation, Hisham Arafat added during a parliamentary session.

The 10,300-kilometre road will be accomplished under a plan seeking to develop Africa at an estimated cost of around $18 billion, the minister said.

The project will start from the Port of Alexandria on the Mediterranean Sea then Cairo, Sudan, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and finally South Africa.

Egypt is looking to develop Africa as the head of the 2019 African Union, Arafat noted.

This came on the sidelines of a meeting held by the African Affairs Committee of the Parliament.

He also highlighted the possibility of a river connection project between Alexandria and Lake Victoria, which should make Egypt a gate of river transport to Central Africa through the Nile River.
