Egypt imports 80,000 tonnes of rice from India

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian government will receive 80,000 tonnes of rice imported from India next week, said Minister of Supply Khaled Hanafy.

This deal will likely help reduce rice prices, that doubled over the past few months, to EGP 4.5 per kilogram, the minister added in a press release.

Moreover, the government gave the green light to buy a million ton of rice from local farmers to meet the growing demand in the Egyptian market, the minister pointed out.

In 2015/16, Around 1.27 million acres were used to likely produce 4.4 million tons, while domestic consumption is forecast to reach 3.6 million tonnes.
