Egypt inks $250m transport deal with China’s State Grid

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy (MERE) signed for the second phase of establishing a transport network with the State Grid Corporation of China at a cost up to $250 million (EGP 4.4 billion).

The second phase was signed during the Egyptian minister of electricity Mohamed Shaker’s visit to China, an official source at the Egyptian Electricity Holding Co. told Almal News.

This project represents 40% of Egypt’s current transport network’s total length with a total investment of $660 million (EGP 10 billion), the source added, forecasting the second phase to be completed prior to next summer.

Moreover, an official source at the MERE noted that the network will be set up with a capacity of 500 kilovolts.

The source indicated that the Chinese company will fund the implementation of an electricity grid to absorb major production capacity from power plants.

On 4 September 2017, Egypt signed an agreement with China to increase the national electricity grid’s capacity as part of the second phase of boosting the Egyptian electricity network’s capacity.
