Egypt mulls 1,300 railroad car supply with Russia’s Transmashholding

Cairo – Mubasher: Egyptian transport minister Kamel El-Wazir has discussed the procedures of implementation a contract of supplying and manufacturing 1,300 new railroad cars for passengers with a delegate from the Russia-based Transmashholding.

The contract was previously signed by the Egyptian National Railway (ENR) and the Russian-Hungarian consortium.

In a meeting, both parties have tackled the main results of the third visit of the technical committee affiliated to the ENR of Russia, according to a press release.

The committee has approved the designs related to the components of the railroad cars, the release added.

The minister said that it has been agreed with Transmashholding to complete two models of the railroad cars by next September and the first will be sent to Hungary for test and the European safety certificate.

The other model will be sent to Egypt to be tested at ENR in preparation for receiving the first group of the railroad cars after the completion of the tests, he added.

The two sides have also tackled potential cooperation between the Russian firm and ENR in developing locomotives and undergrounds along with the railroad cars.

El-Wazir also highlighted the ongoing collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to buy 100 locomotives that will be offered to be launched over the coming period.
