Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt has opened a new international airport in Giza for an initial trial period in an effort to ease pressure from Cairo International Airport and help boost tourism.
Located in close proximity to the Giza Pyramids and the new Grand Egyptian Museum, the Sphinx International Airport is set to operate 30 flights in February during its trial period, Reuters reported.
The new airport has been built at a cost of $17 million within the framework of the tourism ministry’s plan to enhance and facilitate accessibility to historical sites from resort areas on the Red Sea.
The Sphinx International Airport will be fully inaugurated in 2020, according to the London-based news agency.
In October 2015, flights between Egypt and Russia were suspended after a Russian plane crashed over Sinai, resulting in a death toll of 224 people onboard.
A homemade roadside bomb hit last month a tourist bus carrying 14 Vietnamese tourists in Egypt, killing at least two tourists and injuring 12 others.
