Egypt pays EGP 245.7bn in debt interest in H1-20/21

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s debt interest payments fell by 8% year-on-year (YoY) to EGP 245.7 billion in the first half (H1) of fiscal year 2020/2021, compared to EGP 267.19 billion, official data showed.

External debt interest payments increased to EGP 21.59 billion in the July-December period of 2020, compared to EGP 19.93 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier, according to a report released by the Ministry of Finance on Thursday.

Meanwhile, domestic debt interest payments retreated to EGP 224.11 billion in H1 of FY20/21 from EGP 247.25 billion in the same period of FY19/20.

According to the latest figures announced by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), the country’s external debt increased to $125.3 billion at the end of September 2020, while the domestic debt reached EGP 4.35 trillion at the end of December 2019.
