Egypt’s biotech startup Reme-D to expand in Middle East via GIF-led funding

Cairo – Mubasher: Egyptian biotech startup Reme-D has secured a $500,000 investment from the Global Innovation Fund (GIF) to scale its molecular diagnostics solutions across Africa and the Middle East.

The new funding will support the company’s expansion into Nigeria and Libya, production scaling, and R&D in genetic diseases, oncology, and maternal health, according to a press release.

Established in 2022 by Salma Tammam, Reme-D develops polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing kits that remain stable at room temperature, eliminating the need for cold-chain logistics.

The startup leverages nanotechnology and lyophilisation techniques, enabling cost-effective and reliable diagnostics in infrastructure-constrained environments.

The technology reduces operational expenses by up to 40% while minimizing reagent waste and improving testing reliability, particularly in regions with limited access to consistent electricity.

Reme-D currently operates in Egypt, Iraq, Sudan, and Kenya, supporting 92 healthcare facilities and testing around 50,000 patients monthly. Its solutions have reduced testing time by up to 70% in certain applications.
