Egypt’s cotton exports to hit 1.3m metric kantar in 18/19 season

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s exports of cotton, known as the white gold, are expected to rise by 18% for the 2018/2019 session to 1.3 million metric kantar (one kantar is equal to 45.02 kilograms) at a value of $150 million, chairman of the Egyptian Cotton Exporters Association said.

Egyptian cotton is being exported to India, which imports 50% of the cotton, as well as to China, Pakistan, Turkey, Brazil, and Bangladesh, Nabil El-Santaricy told Chinese news platform Xinhua.

The North African nation’s cotton exports boosted due to the 50% annual increase in cultivated lands that reached 300,000 acres in the 2018/2019 session, versus 216,000 acres in the last crop year, El-Santaricy highlighted.

Cotton production is expected to hit 2.4 million kantar in the next year, compared to 1.4 million in the previous session, he added.

He remarked that only four countries produce the highest quality of the white cotton. These countries are Egypt, the US, India, and China.
