Egypt’s domestic debt up 22% in Q1

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s domestic debt moved 22% higher during the first quarter of the fiscal year 2016/17, said the Central Bank of Egypt on Thursday.

The country’s general debt amounted to EGP 2.75 trillion by the end of September 2016 compared with EGP 2.25 trillion for the year-ago period.

Domestic debt instruments accounted for EGP 2.37 trillion out of the total amount, of which Treasury bills and bonds were auctioned at EGP 846.3 billion and EGP 1.52 trillion.

Meanwhile, the aggregate foreign investment in treasury bills went down to EGP 989 million by the end of October against EGP 1.01 billion in last September.

The fiscal year starts on the first of July.
