Egypt’s electricity prices to hike next July

Cairo — Mubasher: The electricity ministry does not plan to scrap power consumer segments, the ministry’s spokesperson said.

The ministry would increase electricity prices in July 2019 as scheduled, Ayman Hamza told DMC TV.

The ministry is to announce the new electricity prices two months ahead of their implementation, he added.

In July, the electricity ministry had hiked electricity tariffs at an average ranging between 35% and 55% for all segments.

The ministry did not exempt any segment from the rise, pointing out that any tariff exemption would be made through the Cabinet.

Electricity minister Mohamed Shaker had previously said that the 47% electricity subsidy cut in the next fiscal year would cover all consumer segments.

Egypt was aiming to slash electricity subsidies by around 47%, or EGP 16 billion ($906 million), in FY18/19, a government document showed in April.
