Egypt’s gov’t targets new amendments to customs law

By Mostafa Adel

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s Ministry of Finance is planning to put forward some amendments to Customs Law before the fiscal year 2016/17, said Magdy Abdel Aziz, head of Egypt’s customs authority.

The ministry will submit to the House of Representative four amendments aiming at restricting smuggling, imposing harsher fines, and activating risk assessment, Abdel Aziz told Mubasher.

Commenting on the new tariffs, he regarded this move improbable at the present time, pointing out that more focus will be made on amending regulations and using X-ray inspection equipment.

The Egyptian government targets to raise EGP27 billion ($3 billion) from customs revenues in the current fiscal year, compared to EGP20.5 billion ($2.6 billion) in 2014/15.
